How do I know if my baby’s skin is dry? What are the signs of neurodermatitis? What can I do about it?
Babies often get dry patches on their faces. This means that their skin is rougher than usual and flaky. If the whole body is affected, the nappy area usually stays unaffected. More often than not, neurodermatitis in babies also starts in the face with eczema (usually a red inflammatory skin reaction combined with itchy skin) on their cheeks. It is possible that other areas of their bodies (except the nappy area) are also affected by dry or inflamed spots right from the start. Regular application of creams and bathing in rehydrating oil baths help the skin to absorb more moisture and fats. Keep in mind that oil baths can make babies very slippery and difficult to hold. Also try to avoid further irritants such as woollen clothing, scratchy labels or seams, and chlorinated water.
If your child starts to scratch or is having trouble sleeping you should see a doctor for advice and treatment.
