Baby Skin
What is special about baby skin?
Baby skin is very sensitive. It is a lot thinner than that of adults and its top layer has a looser structure and is less resistant. The stratum corneum of the skin that wards off pollutants is not yet fully developed, making the skin more sensitive to environmental influences.
The skin’s natural acid mantle still needs to be formed during the first few weeks of life and it regenerates more slowly in children than in adults. This layer is important for warding off bacteria and pathogens.
Compared to adults, the stratum corneum of a child’s skin contains more moisture. At the same time, it produces less sebum, meaning that their skin, which is covered by a very thin, hydrolipid film, can easily dry out. Additionally, their skin is less protected against the cold and against injury.
Why should you use baby skincare products at all?
After birth, a baby’s skin must quickly adapt to a new environment. After many months of being surrounded by amniotic fluid, it must now adapt to air and external environmental influences.
Although in the past it was thought best not to use skincare and bath products for babies, today we know that washing with water alone dehydrates baby’s skin. However, since baby skin is very sensitive, you cannot use skincare products designed for adult skin.
This is why we have developed our special baby skincare range, HiPP Babysanft, that is completely free from undesirable ingredients and designed specifically to meet the needs of sensitive baby skin.
